Challenges to Democracy and Rule of Law in Central Europe

Speaker: Gordon Bajnai, Former Prime Minister of Hungary (2009-2010); Leader of the Together 2014 electoral alliance; Senior Adviser, Center for Strategic & International Studies

Ten years have passed since the accession of Hungary and seven other Central European states to the European Union. Their integration has been challenging, but largely successful. Yet the repercussions of the financial and economic crisis revealed the fragility of democracy and the rule of law in a number of these countries. What are the causes and consequences of rising nationalism and social populism throughout the region, and what political and economic remedies can be applied at national and European levels?

Co-sponsored by the Center for Global Economic Governance and the East Central European Center
